Step 1: Verify your school

NOTE: Families not placed in their chosen school or program will attend their assigned boundary school.

Make sure to choose the correct school year.

A student's legal name and birthdate (birth certificate) and immunization/waiver is required in order to complete your enrollment.

Anything not submitted in the enrollment portal should be emailed to enrollment@stillwaterschools.org or sent/dropped off: District 834 Central Services Building, 1875 Greeley Street South, Stillwater, MN 55082

NOTE: When enrolling, the PowerSchool E-Enrollment account IS NOT the same as your school-given school account. You will use your personal email address to set this up and log in.

Step 3: Submit forms

If you are a district resident interested in attending a school outside of your attendance area be sure to also submit the Alternate Enrollment Form. Alternate enrollment is based on space available. Families who apply by Jan. 15 will have priority. NOTE: Families not placed in their chosen school or program will attend their assigned boundary school.
If you are interested in Amigos Spanish Immersion there are no additional forms required. Simply choose Spanish Immersion during the enrollment process. Admission is based on a lottery system. Families who apply by Jan. 15 will have priority. NOTE: Families not placed in their chosen school or program will attend their assigned boundary school.
If your family resides outside of our district boundary, you may choose to open enroll. Please fill out the Open Enrollment Form and return it to our Enrollment Processor, Julie Tonkin. This can be done via email or brought in to our District Office at 1875 Greeley Street South, Stillwater, MN 55082. Turning in this form does not guarantee that the student will be able to attend as enrollment will need to be approved and will be contingent on space availability. The student may be added onto a wait list.

Early Childhood and Preschool

Early Childhood Education

The Early Childhood Family Center (ECFC) offers a variety of ways for you to connect with other parents of children from birth to age five. It’s a safe space to learn, laugh, reflect, and vent! Come learn practical tips and tricks from parents who have been right where you are and get advice from Parent Educators. Watch your children play and interact with other kids, connect with other families in the community, and make some new parent friends.

Register for Preschool

We offer 4-year-old preschool in all seven of our elementary schools and the Early Childhood Family Education Center (ECFC). We also offer 3-year-old preschool at the ECFC. Our preschool program has been given the Four Star Parent Aware rating and is closely aligned with the district's curriculum, which ensures a smooth transition to kindergarten and beyond.

Preschool is a fee-based program provided by Community Education. Limited scholarships are available for Minnesota residents who are not yet 5 as of Sept. 1. Depending on your family income, you may be eligible for discounted or free services. Please call the Early Childhood Family Center at 651-351-4000 for more information about preschool tuition assistance.

Preschool registration utilizes a lottery system to give ALL applicants an equal chance of a child being accepted into the preschool program. More information can be found at stillwaterschools.org/preschool.

Kindergarten Enrollment

We look forward to welcoming your kindergarten student into our school community. Kindergarten is a very exciting year for students to learn and grow. Our curriculum balances active, playful, hands-on learning with individual, small and large-group instruction designed to nurture early academic skills and promote social development.

In addition to our traditional kindergarten program, we also offer an optional Dual Language Spanish Immersion program called Amigos Unidos. To apply for Amigos Unidos, you will choose "Spanish Immersion" for their home school when completing the normal enrollment process.

Your child will be placed in their assigned school. If you wish to enroll into another district school, please complete the Alternate Enrollment form.

Kindergarten Enrollment Timeline

Kindergarten students should be five years old by Sept. 1. Parents may request early entrance consideration for children turning five by Oct. 31.
A "Welcome to Kindergarten" informational brochure will be sent to resident families in November.
The resident priority deadline to complete the Kindergarten Enrollment form is Jan. 15. This is also the deadline to apply for alternate enrollment. Resident applications will be accepted after the deadline, but alternate choice schools may be filled.
The state deadline for open enrollment applications is Jan. 15. Late applications will be accepted as space allows.

How to Enroll in Kindergarten

Step 1: Verify your school

Enter your address in the district map to confirm your assigned elementary school. Students will be enrolled in their assigned school, regardless of the school selected in the enrollment form.

Elementary

Elementary school is a time for students to let their natural curiosity guide their learning. Our amazing teachers create safe and welcoming classrooms where ALL students feel valued and included. Once your enrollment has been submitted, processed, and approved, a welcome email from the district will be sent to your listed email address to confirm your enrollment. At this point, your assigned Pony Center secretary (determined by the spelling of student's last name) will reach out to schedule an orientation appointment. Amigos Unidos Spanish Immersion

Stillwater Area Public Schools offers an optional Dual Language Spanish Immersion program called Amigos Unidos Spanish Immersion. To apply for Amigos Unidos Spanish Immerision program, you will select "Spanish Immersion" during the regular enrollment process. Choose from "Spanish Immersion (Lake Elmo)" for elementary students and "Spanish Immersion (Oak-Land Middle School)" for middle school students.

It's now easier to apply for the Spanish Immersion program! No need to fill out a separate form. Just choose Spanish Immersion during the enrollment process when you choose your school. Then you will be added to the lottery.

Alternate Enrollment / School Choice

Families in our community value choice and we provide a variety of learning environments to meet your child’s individual needs. All students in District 834 are eligible to attend school outside of their assigned attendance area providing space is available at the school of their choice and application processes are followed (see Policy 509). Requests are filled based on priorities outlined on the Administrative Procedures.

Transportation will not be provided for students choosing to enroll outside of their attendance area.

Alternate Enrollment Application

Applications will be accepted beginning Oct. 1, with priority given for those submitted prior to Jan. 15

Stillwater Area Public Schools District 834 allows students to attend a school other than the one serving their attendance area under the following conditions:

An application must be submitted to the Enrollment Office. The approval of each request will depend upon adequate space at the requested elementary or middle school, as well as economical and educationally sound staffing arrangements.
District transportation may be utilized as long as the district incurs no additional cost.

Transportation will establish district bus routes for all students attending schools within their attendance areas. Transportation will establish bus loads and routing in a manner that is most cost-effective for the District.
Requests for District transportation for alternate school students will be approved if:

There is room on the bus.
Rerouting is not necessary.
The arrangements will enable the student to arrive and leave school on time.
Additional stops necessary to pick up or drop off alternate students will not cause the bus to be late to its next destination.

Alternate students who attempt to ride district buses without permission will lose the alternate school privilege.

Only under extraordinary circumstances will new requests or change of alternate requests be considered after Aug. 1.

Parents will be notified by Feb. 15 regarding whether the student(s) are approved or not approved.

We welcome non-district resident students through Minnesota’s Open Enrollment Program, which allows any Minnesota student to apply to enroll in any public school in the state tuition-free.

All non-district resident student applications will be considered, provided that space is available at the school of choice, students are not dependent on district transportation and application processes are followed (see Policy 509).

To apply for open enrollment, families must complete an Open Enrollment Application. You may either email or bring the completed form to our enrollment office at 1875 Greeley Street South, Stillwater, MN 55082.

For priority consideration, please complete this application by Jan. 15 for the following school year enrollment to be included in our tiered lottery process, outlined in our Administrative Procedures.

In the event that we receive more applications than available spots and the tiered lottery process is complete, students will be added to a waitlist on a first come, first served basis. If accepted, enrollment staff will contact you.

Homeschooling

MN Statutes 120A.22, Subd 5. The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) has determined that homeschools are private schools that provide their own curriculum, transcripts and diplomas. MDE does not vouch for or certify curriculum, transcripts or diplomas. District 834 cannot provide curriculum, transcripts or diplomas for home school students.

Best of Both Worlds - Application to Participate

Did you know you can take advantage of all the classes, activities and unique learning experiences at Stillwater Area Public Schools while still maintaining your homeschool status? Homeschool students can apply to participate in School District 834 curricular courses. Decisions regarding enrollment will be made depending on the capacity of the program or class, school capacity, and other considerations. For secondary programs, students are eligible to take up to two classes per semester.

Child Care Before And After School

Adventure Club school age care program is designed to meet the needs of working families by providing high quality child care before and after school for students preschool through grade 5. All-day care is offered on non-school days and in the summer at select sites. Drop-in child care may also be available.

We offer a separate Spin program in the summer for students entering grades 4-7. During the school year, Spin programming for older students is offered where registration of fourth and fifth grade students meets the minimum enrollment requirement.

Transportation

While completing the online enrollment, you will be asked to indicate whether or not you would like to request transportation for your student(s). After the enrollment is approved and our transportation department considers your request, you will receive an email from transportation with further information.

District Census

It is very important to us that we maintain accurate and up-to-date census files on all households located within our district boundaries. This includes households with newborns and preschool age children, those who attend our schools and those that have children being home schooled or attending a non-public school. The information you provide will be used to make enrollment projections, program planning, determine staffing and classroom space needs and more.
