Personal Electronic Communication Devices

The information on this page is a brief summary. For complete information, please review Policy 524.5: Personal Electronic Communication Devices.

Phone-Free School Day

To support student learning, engagement, and well-being, Stillwater Area Public Schools has adopted a phone-free school day. Students are expected to leave personal electronic communication devices at home whenever possible.

Students who bring a personal electronic communication device to school—including cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, tablets, or similar devices—must keep the device powered off and stored in the location designated by their school throughout the school day unless an approved exception applies.

Exceptions

Limited exceptions may be approved for:

  • A student's Individualized Education Program (IEP)
  • A Section 504 Plan
  • A documented health plan
  • An emergency situation
  • Instructional use authorized by school staff

Student Responsibility

Students are responsible for the care and security of any personal electronic communication device brought to school. The district is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged devices.

Failure to Follow the Policy

Students who do not comply with district expectations for personal electronic communication devices may have their device confiscated and be subject to progressive disciplinary action in accordance with district policy and school procedures.

Each school establishes procedures for the collection, storage, return, and retrieval of personal electronic communication devices. Families should refer to their school for building-specific procedures.
